Dogmeat is the only one I can tolerate, he gets in the way a lot, but at least he's a decent packmule, quiet, and doesn't judge you ever. They're effectively useless, and if anything a complete hindrance. They aren't very helpful in a fight besides maybe being a meat shield, I cannot count how many times I'm firing away mowing down Super Mutants, and Cait is hiding behind cover dicking around. No what makes me cannot stand them is they're in the damn way ALL the time, they won't shut up about whatever, picking up junk, or whatever junk you pick up, and idk who at Beth thought it was a good idea to have Dogmeat run IN FRONT of you he is perpetually in the way, and sometimes it makes me want to scream. I've managed at least once to Max out all of their affinity and really get to know them, barring Strong if I'm honest. It's nothing to do with their character, which is tragic to me, they're all very interesting and fleshed out.
